THE BENEFITS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
COUNSELORS
School guidance and counseling programs improve the school
climate and enhance the education of all students. Research indicates that
the promotion of positive social and emotional development enhances overall
academic achievement and resiliency.
Our futures depend on the contributions of competent, socially
and emotionally healthy people. As a vital part of the educational team,

HOW DOES A STUDENT SEE THE COUNSELOR?
Referral can be made by:
Self
Teacher
Parent/guardian
Counselor
Administrator
Friend
A student can make a self-referral by using a guidance pass in
order to discuss a problem with a counselor. Regular participation in
guidance services can be initiated by a parent, teacher, and/or administrator
in consultation with the school counselor. The counselor would need to
receive parental permission before any student is seen in counseling on a
regular basis. At times, some regular group members may be allowed to invite
a friend to their counseling group as part of our "bring a friend" activity.
